BOROUGH COUNCIL

SPECIAL MEETING.; A special meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council was held last evening at 7.15 o’clock. Present: Mr G. A. Perry (Mayor), Crs. Turner, Caliari, Fox, Elcock, Heinz and Stuart. Apologies were made for Crs. Freitas and Stopfortji. , The Kanieri Electric Ltd. wrote stating that their manager, Mr W. J. Radford, was leaving for America at . the end of May and that he would be 1 returning on September 1. During his I -visit he would confer with his directors i in regard to electric lighting arrangements in Hokitika. The review of the * contract with,, the Council would come up for decision again at-, the . end of the ten year ; period on August .-21 next, and it was suggested that t-Jie Council defer consideration thereof uptil the return of Mr Radford, as he proposed in his conference with his directors to suggest a rearrangement of the prices charged for power to bring them into line with those charged in the neighbouring town of Gfeymouth. The letter was ’received and the Council decided to extend the date of settlement of the ten year period until September 21st., conditional on the rifhts of the Council not being prejudiced. It was considered that.the. suggestion would enable a prompt, agreement. to be ratified, the Mavor stating that there was no possibility of the Council taking over the, rights of ) the Company at valuation,as the con-. / tract provided for, if so desired, ; The Town Clerk reported that Mr M. H. Houston was the only applicant for the position of Assessor for , the. Boronch at the Assessment Court in connection with the revaluation''of the town and he recommended his appointment. The recommendation was agreed to. , Leave of absence from May 13 to 20 was granted to V. Conning, an abattoir employee, to enable him to attend a military camp. ■ : ft. was decided that the Chairman of Public Works arrange for the iiwnediate formation and gravelling of two approaches to the new school building in Sale Street, the formation of a footpath and clearing in the front thereof to be carried out later.

Owing to his' inability to attend meetings of the Centennial Committee, Cr. Fox asked to be relieved. This was agreed to and Cr Freitas was appointed in his stead. Some plans were placed before the Council for approval. The Town Clerk stated that the District Deeds Office required the Council to pass resolutions agreeing not to claim frontages to several sections, where,the buildings, or'fences did not eome un to the street line. In one section the fence was back at one end four inches and at the other end nine inches, and the Deeds Office required formal denial of the intention to claim the area. The necessary resolutions w r ere agreed to.
