FURTHER ADVANCE PER TON

WELLINGTON, April 29. A further advance of ten shillings a ton in the wholesale price of sugar was announced to-day, Bringing the y total increase in under a month to 40s \ a ton. Retailers are working on the .smallest of margins. Sugar is now 19s, a bag over the counter, and costs 18s to J land in the shop. From to-day the price a pound will be 4d, irrespective of the quantity purchased. .Merchants can give no reason for the increase.? The . Colonial Refining Company has notified that the advance affects all grades, including tablets, bulk, and cartons, icing, coffee crystals, golden .j syrup, and treacle. The . prices f.u.b. Auckland are now: Brewers’ crystals, £2B 10s; castor sugar, 701 b bags f.o.b. Auckland are now: £3O os; No. 1, £27 15s; No. IA, £27; No. 2, £26 10s; No,. 3, £25 10s. The prices at April 1 and April 22 were: Brewers’ crystals, £27 and £2B; castor sugar, £2B 15s and £29 15s; No. 1, £26 5s and £27 os; No. IA, £25 10s ' and £26 l0s ; No. 2, £25 and £26; No. 3, £24 and £25. Similar advances are made in golden syrup and treacle, in casks and in cases ( and boxes containing tins. The prices are applicable to all parts of New Zealand, except the Auckland 7 district.
