The Transport Department has inaugurated for this Aveok, on the eve of the holiday season, a period of special preparation on the part of motordrivers and public for the extra volume of traffic which will be on the roads. “Safety” is the special injunction, and the pedestrian, as well as the motorist, has special obligations to regard to ensure that degree of safety to avoid accident. New Zealand has an enviable record already, but the authorities are not resting on that pleasurable notoriety. The Hon. Minister (Mr Semple) is never tired of enjoining on all concerned the special nepd for care and consideration in driving along thoroughfares, and regard for the safety of the pedestrian’ traffic. Many signs and warnings have been issued and posted in various places, and in some centres processions with a sense of the dramatic are being organised. Slogans are given over the air, and special talks also broadcast. Doubtless the schools have special attention drawn to the matter for the safeguarding of the pupils. The essential part to play on the roads and along the streets, is care. Where streets are narrow, as is the case here in some instances, the public should not attempt to cross Avithout a careful scrutiny right or left, to avoid any fast approaching traffic. It is wisest to cross at the appointed places marked, for there the motorists must themselves exercise special care and safeguard foot traffic. On the highways speed is practised too unduly. With improving roads and higher poivered cars, this is a temptation Avhich dri\ rers must- curb i| they are to observe the behest to drive ivith care. When approaching all crossings, the fullest precaution should be taken. Advice in plenty is being offered driver and pedestrian alike, and if the proper attention is paid to all that is said, Neiv Zealand should further enhance its record. The obligation is on the road users to do their part, and failure to do so will reflect on them and the unfortunate injured.
