BURIED IN SAND
TRENCH FALLS IN ON WORKMEN (Per Press ASmjciuuou —Copyrignt). NEW PLYMOUTH, September 12. Two men were buried oeneath tons of sand when a trench in which they i were working collapsed at Patea this afternoon. One of tnem, George Edgecombe,' of Patea, was extricated, unharmed, but the other, George Allen, married of Palmerston North, was dead wiien was dug out, two hours later. . The men were working together when the trench winch was fourteen feet deep, caved in. The rescuers could work only two at a time. Edgei combe, who was in a standing position, was almost clear- when a further slip * . juried him to the chin. It was not till an hour later that he was released. Allen was in a crouching position when the earth fall occurred, and lie was dead when brought clear. Death was due to suffocation.
