UNEMPLOYMENT RETURN FIGURES. (Per Press Association—Copyright). WELLINGTON, September 20. ; The unemployment return for August 27, including: those in the register who are for health or other reasons unlit for employment, shows a reduction of 17,169 when compared with the corresponding figure for August 2S last year. Compared with the position last month there is an increase of 1,775. For the four weekly, period the expenditure from the fund under the heading, promotion of employment, as distinct from relief expenditure, is estimated at £191,636. INJURED IN CAR COLLISION HASTINGS, September 20.

Serious, head injuries were received by Robert Mintoft, of Hastings, when two cars collided at the intersection of Staubyn Street and Willopark Road, about 10.30 last evening. He was admitted to the Memorial Hospital, and a report at mid-day was that his condition was very serious. Mintoft was a passenger in a car driven by J. Heerian, of Hastings, who escaped without injury. The driver of the other vehicle, William George Adams, also of Hastings, was similarly fortunate that he was not hurt. Women passengers in both cars received slight injuries but were able to proceed to their homes.

As a result of the impact both cars were overturned and extensively damaged. ATTACK ON RADIO. CHRISTCHURCH, Sep. 20. “Absolutely degrading both to adults and children,” was a description given to certain items broadcast by Government stations by Mr A. A. AIR RESERVE. ■ '.WELLINGTON, September 19. The .Minister of Defence, Hon. F. Jones, has announced u general plan on the part of the Air Department l for the formation, of a Civil. Reserve of the Royal New Zealand- Air Force, with an 1 initial strength of five thousand men.

The purpose of the reserve plan is to build up a body of men whose, special, training and experience may: bo availed of, as auxiliaries of tile air force, in the event of an emergency.

IMMIGRATION' SUPPORTED. HASTINGS, September 19. Support for ;i scheme of immigration to New Zealand was given by the Hastings Chamber of Commerce at its meeting to-night. Tlie meeting dosoussed the whole position, and it was agreed the. question was one of the most serious. affecting the Dominion at the present time. It was suggested tliat many, exiled Germans would make excellent immigrants. The meeting passed the following' resolution: “That the-Associated Chambers of Commerce be asked to impress the Government was the urgency of the need of a well-planned and an ex-, tensive immigration policy, together with any other practicable means toward a rapid increase of the population, as being essential to the future security and well being of New Zealand.”

ARSON CHARGE. DUNEDIN, September 21. Arising out of two fires at llanfurl.v early on the morning of September 8, Harold Robert Black, 24, single, was charged in the police court with arson. Accused pleaded guilty. In a statement to the police," lie said lie burnt down the shops because of financial difficulties, with the object of securing the insurance money.
