Aii ncrease of just over 10,000 in the | number of rural mail-boxes ejected j since March, 1929, is disclosed in u statement issued yesterday by the Post"' and Telegraph Department. The boxes totalled 19,338 in 1929, as compared with 29,341 at the end of August, 1938. The boxes are a familiar feature of the countryside. They are made at the department’s workshops and, for a moderate fee, the users are provided with a miniature post office at the nearest practicable roadside point to their, residence. It is a two-way service, the boxholders being able to arrange .with the contractor to huy, stamps and post outward letters, purchase money orders and postal notes and dispatch parcels.
