lOr.|{V KILLS YOUNG GIRL. (Per Press Association - -Copyright). WELLINGTON, Sep. 20. A tragic accident occurred when Joan Elizabeth Beapley, -"aged seven?' was killed. The child, a daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Beazley, was standing on the road Avith a bicycle, talking to another girl, ■' when . a lorry backing out from a crossing, caught her and the bicycle with fatal results. The child’s father .was in. the. lorry when the accident occurred. . The drives er was one of Beazley’s employees.
BAND CONTEST DATE ALTERED. ; TEMUKA, Sep. 20. The selection of the same /lay for- the ; provincial band contest at Temnk’a as that chosen for the General Election was discussed at a meeting to-night of' the Band Conjmittep. Thirteen bands throughout Canterbury have been affected'- jby thb coincidence of. dates. Moving that- the present date, October 15, be changed'tp October 22, Mr A. W. Buzan, Mayor of Temu&v,.'? and president of the committee, said ' that apart from the lack of intere* that would'be shoAvn, holding the contest on election, day Would present many .difficulties. . ; ' ' Mr G. C. Tully, the secretary of the committee, said that if. the contest was held over until November, four of the bands’ would not? jjaT' able tb ' compete because.jof .the shearing seasoii. There were race ..meetings and other big draws on week-ends round the date first chosen, hut October 22 seemed the best day. The motion, Ayas carried and the Avork of arranging for the oon^h^roceeded. ■ A partial settlement was Tfe'ached in the adjourned Dominion engine drivers’ dispute, AA'hich was heard before a ConI ciliation Commissioner,-in Wellington to-day. Matters referred to the Court Avere wages, hours, and holidays Agreement was reached on overtime for dav and shift workers, standby time; travelling time, dirt xnon.e’y, ,emergercy Avork, and other* machinery clauses. Partial agreement was'also readied in hours of'work for shift workers. All requests for exemption ivere held' over for further discussion. '■ - !
