FOR U.S.A. NAVY TO BE WORLD’S BIGGEST. < ,r\ £'»'• (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). LOS ANGELES, September 19. Addressing the American Legion Convention, Senator Walsh advocated that the United States should begin building up the world’s most powerful navy? He commented: “A most striking lesson of the present war spirit is that weakness encourages aggression.” He added that America’s navy must be backed by rigid neutrality, the United States completely suspending trade with all belligerents. He declared: “Meddling with Europe’s explosive rivalries is inviting disaster. We have no pre-ordained mandate to police the world.” . U.S.A. AIR FORCE EXPANSION. LOS ANGELES, September 20. Urging the speeding up of American defences, Mr Louis Johnson, As-sistant-Secretary of War, told tlie National Defence Legion that many of the industrial plants designated by the War Department would be unable to furnish munitions for months, and some of them not for a year. It was hoped that the United States would have 2300 war planes by 1940.
