ASHBURTON COUNTY MEETING. (Per Press Association—Copyright) ASHBURTON, September 17. Spring racing in the South Island was inaugurated on Saturday by the Ashburton County Racing Club’s fixture. The weather was fine; but there was a boisterous, cool wind. The attendance was very satisfactory, and the racing was interesting. The track was in fast order, and its hard condition no doubt caused the many upsets in form during the afternoon. The sum of £15,232 was Handled, compared w r ith £15,282 10s at last year's spring meeting, a decrease of £SO 10s, . Tile Derby colt, Aeolus, took the Rosehill Guineas after an exciting finish with Pecruchio and Limulet. Gold Rod, winner of the Hill Stakes, equaned Valicare s track record of 1 min 38sccs. The Veilmond colt Rodborough, equalled the course record in the Camellia Stakes, and also greatly enhanced his Epsom Handicap prospects. Chief results were:— Camellia Stakes—Rodborough 1, King’s Head 2, Bonnie Legion 3. Won by a length; half a length between ,second and third. Time linin' 24 2-5 sec. which equals the course ,record. At the Mentone Turf Club’s meeting to-day the followingwas the result oi the Mentone Cup, one mile and a quarter.—Pageant 1, Footmark (N.Z.) 2, Plymouth Hoe 3. There were eight starters. In a keen finish Pageant obtained a neck verdict frojn the New Zealander, Footmark, who played up at the barrier, and during the race tried to run off the course. Plymouth Hoe was a head away. Time 2min 61secs. Netherlea and Raeburn were unplaced in the Yarraman Handicap. Queen of Song, Silver Bond, and Edible were unplaced in the Dandenoiig Welter, first division and Whernside and Pharoah were unplaced in the second division.
