The death took place yesterday morning of Mrs Alfreda Smith, a wellknown resident of Ross for many years. Deceased was 73 years of age and loaves a daughter (Mrs A. W. Peebles of Ross) and son (Mr W. Smith of Watarpa). The funerhl takes place to Ross Cemetery to-morrow afternoon.

A fire last evening in a garage in which bis motor-car was stored, destroyed both the garage and tne motorrcar belonging to Mr Cliff Barrow, of Rcefton. The vehicle Had been placed in. the. garage as usual, and about 8. o’clock the building was observed to be in flames. Although every endeavour was made in an effort 5 to save the car,, it was totally destroyed with the building.

The Post Office Hotel, which has been so successfully conducted by Mr H. Steel for the past ten years, has been disposed of to Mr H. J. Harrison, of Kaiapoi. The new proprietor Has been a very, active member of various sports bodies in Kaiapoi, and was recently entertained by the Working 5 Men’s Club at a farewell social there and presented with a fountain pen. Mr Harrison, who is president of the Kaiapoi Rugby Football Club and president of the Kaiapoi Surf and LifeSaving Club, was recently entertained by the two clubs and presented with aj's'jnokefrk companion set fromtho football club and a leather suitcase from the surf club.
