BY RAILWAYMEN

CHRISTCHURCH, June 18
Resenting what they consider to be an implication that the rank and file of the Railways Department locomotive stall - are not, measuring up to their duties and their calling, members of the Canterbury branch of the Engine Drivers’, Firemen’s and Cleaners’ Association have issued a statement in. reply to the Leader of the Opposition—“ Canterbury locomotive staff strongly 'deprecates the attack on the Government made by Hen. A. Hamilton over the radio on May 7 with reference to the record smashes taking place on the railways. We consider it a slur on ourselves and an implication that the rank and file are not measuring no to the duties of our calling, whereas as practical railwiiymeii. we are definitely of opinion the series of mishaps is directly traceable to the former Government and their administration, under the board of control. Further we appreciate the efforts of the present, Government, to improve the working conditions of the railway service.”
