SHANGHAI, June 16
The rain continues unabated. The flood Inter reached 70 miles due south of Kaifeng. and is now sweeping towards Chowkiakow, 40 miles west of Honan Province.
The combined frantic efforts of the Japanese soldiers and Chinese farmers were unable to arrest the breaches, though the Shantung inundation seems to be under control. Both Chinese and Japanese are building dikes along the entire length of the Lunghai railway as safety zones. BRITISH PROTEST TO JAPAN. (Per British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. June 10. Answering a question in the House of Commons on the effects of air attacks on Canton, the Under-Secretary for Foreign affairs (Mr R.. A. Butler) said that the official estimate of casualties was at present incomplete, but reports indicate that between 3500 and 4000 persons had been killed and wounded between May 28 and June 10. The British Government had protested to Japan against the indiscriminate bombing of the civilian areas and tliick-lv-populated centres. Asked- if a reply had been received to this protest, Mr Butler said that certain preliminary observations had been made to the British Ambassador by the Japanese Foreign Minister (General Ugaki), who had promised to send a considered reply. FLOODS EXTENDING. ASSISTANCE TO CHINESE. (Received this day at 2.0 p.in.). SHANGHAI. June 10. Chinese resistance to the Japanese advance on Kankow is stiffening. As the floods swell under the endless rain. Yangtsekinng is twenty feet above normal. 'The inundation has passed, Fukiio. surging down on Chowkiakow Junction of Kaihi and Tashn rivers, ninety-five miles from the original
breaches. Chinese artillerv sank si\- Japanese motor-boats and 20 canvas heats, from which landings on the north and south hanks of the Yangtsekinng were being attempted.
Chinese report a clearance ol the south hank and recapture of Chienkiangkow and Siiitouslian north hank, where infantry are doggedly attacking.
