MONTHLY MEETING. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening at 8 o’clock. Present: Mr G. A. Perry, (Mayor), Crs Duff,. Parry, Elcock," Heinz, Michel. Apologies were: made for Crs Teiclielmann, Park and Thompson. FINANCIAL. The' Treasurer reported a credit balance: General Account of £686/6/10, Water Supply Account,. 19/2, Water Supply Repayment Account, £320/13:7. —Received.' _ • Accounts amounting to £338 'H '9 were passed for paymeiit.

INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From President, Automobile .Association (Westland Branch) .advising, .that, that body had .urged, the ..Railway De : partment to re-tarseal the Weld Street crossing to a level- with the rails, and asking the Council for its support to the proposal.—Received; Council'to support proposal. From Mrs W. A'gnew, Rimu. apple ation on behalf of the Rimu Hill-billies for permission to hold a concert in the Regent Theatre on the 6th May next. The concert'is to be rendered by the Rimu* Hill-billies and the proceeds. are to go towards a fund for providing radios ’for the children’s ward .at the Westland Hospital, nature of the concert is vocal and instrumental.—Received and"granted. .From Acting-Chairman, Hokitika State School Jubilee Committee, advising that the Committee are considering a proposal to establish a swimming bath at the H.okvtika District High School for instructing, the- pupils in •swimming, and, asking wh.ethei the Council would undertake to fill the bath (63.000. gals.) at least once a week, and if so, on what terms. The hath would be solely for the use,of the children during school hours, —Received. Cr Parn moved, tiiat the request be granted and the water supplied free of charge, so long as the Borough, supply is available,' and without obligation by the Council. —Seconded;, by Cr Elcock and carried. Page 974, appointing the Hokitika Borough Council to be tile principal authority for tlie purpose of the Election'of one member of the Greymouth Harbour Board DJ the electors of the combined Boroughs of Hokitika, Kumara and Ross.—Received; referred to Returning Officer tor attention.

From Mr F. M. Singer, application for a street light at the intersection of Hampden Street and the Blue Spur road.— Received; referred to Public Works Committee.

From Dominion Displays Ltd,, asking particulars of any by-laws governing the erection of metal, signs to walls, verandas, or side fascias of shops. -Received ; referred to Town Clerk. From A. Ballinger and 26 other petitioners, drawing attention to the serir cus danger and loss to residents through, the late flooding between Fitzherbert Street and Bealey Street, and asking: the Council to take steps to prepare some suitable protection to save the low-lying parts of the town from a very imminent danger in the rainy, periods. Received. The Mayor moved that the Council ask the Resident Engineer to raise the stop bank on Gibson Quav as outlined in the report of the District Engineer of July 26, 1935, but before the work is started the Engineer be asked to confer with the Council as some alterations to the orignal proposals may be necessary. Seconded by Or Michel and carried.

From District Employment Officei, Grey mouth, advising that in regard to holiday pay under Scheme 13 that the amount is disallowed on the grounds that wet days .should not be paid for in lieu of holidays due under the Award, r— Received. From Municipal Association, re Social Security’Plan.—Received. From Secretary Municipal Association ,forwarding copy of proposed Municipal Corporation Act, Amendment Bill. —Received.

From N. Z. Refrigerating Co., Ltd., advising that the following quantities of . meat were delivered into Hokitika during the period , from Ist, March to 4th. April : 50-shown, 8 lambs.—Received. From Hokitika Fire Board opposing the removal of the Fire Station from Municipal Reserve Part No. 53«. Received. •From J. S. Langford, application to lease part, of Municipal Reserve So. 537, and he would agree to the Fire Station ajid fire-bell remaining in ji.« present position on that Reserve.--Re-ceived. Or Parry, moved that, the request. he granted, lease to he lor 21 vears, subject to the Fir.- Board interests being protected, rental to be 5 per cent, of unimproved value. Seconded by Cr Hein/, and carried. The Chairman of Works reported that the horse machine for cleaning footpaths was almost completed, and be hoped to start on the cleaning of footpaths next week.
