RABBIT SHOOTING ACCIDENT

MASTERTON, April 26

A shooting accident occurred at Wangaehu, near Masterton, on Sunday aftertoon, when Cyril Beard, a middleaged married man, employed in the wool store of Dalgety and Company, Wellington, was accidentally shot in the back. Beard, in company with several companions, was shooting rabbits. A lad. M. N. of Masterton, was loading one of j the rifles. It accidentally discharged,; the bullet entering Beard’s back. The yictim was standing only a few yards away.

Several hours later after a strenuous journey through broken country in heavy rain, the injured man was admitted to a private hospital in Masterton. His condition »s reported to be satisfactory.

FISHERMAN’S BODY FOUND

KAIKOURA, April 27

The body of John Henry Roberts, who was drowned on April 12 while fishing, was found washed up on the rocks by some persons who were fishing round the Kaikoura reef.

An inquest was held before Mr J. Davidson, J.P. A verdict was given that Roberts was accidentally drowned through his dinghy capsizing in a rough sea while fishing.

A large number attended the funeral. The Rev Father Davlin conducted the service.

So far, nothing has beep seen of the body of the father of Roberts who was drowned at the same time.

LIN WOOD P.O. OPENED. CHRISTCHURCH, April 27. The new Lin wood Post Office, erected at a cost of £6184, was formally opened yesterday morning by the Member of Parliament for the District, the Hori D. G. Sullivan. There was a big attendance, and the official visitors included local body members arid Members of Parliament and their wives. Many references were made by speakers to the service provided by the Post and Telegraph Department in the Dominion, and many remiriiscences told of .early early days in LinwoQO. Mr Sullivan was presented with an inscribed gold key ■by the contractor, Mr, N. McGillivray. The architect for the new building was Mr W. H. Trengrove.

There are 54 nominations for the" City Council, compared with 58 last year. Both the Labour Party and the Citizens’ Committee na-e running strong tickets for tho city and suburban elections. .

RELIGION TN SCHOOLS. AUCKLAND, April 27

A protest against the suggested removal from school committees of authority under which they permit daily religious exercises at the opening of schools, took unusual form at All Saints’ Anglican Church, Ponsonby, on Sunday night. At the close ! of evensong, the matter was brought to the notice of the congregation by the vicar, Canon W. IV, Averill, and the following resolution was carried unanimously:—“That this congregation of All Saants’ Church solemnly protests in the name of Christian democracy against the expressed intention of tho Minister of Education to terminate daily voluntary religious exercises in State primary schools of the Dominion in opposition to clearly expressed wishes of the great majority of tuttehts of tho children corteorried.”
