UNSATISFACTORY PROGRESS
WORKMEN ARE BISMISSED. (Per Press Association—Copyright). MASTERTON, March 8. Because of the unsatisfactory progress made, a halt has been called with j work on the road deviation at Weraiti, and the 30 men engaged on the job at <lay labour under Government subsidy | have been dismissed by the Masterton | County Council. | The deviation, which eliminates about half a mile of road, was put in hand, following a conference in Masterton between representatives of local bodies and the Acting Minister of Labour (the Hon P. C. Webb), and the work was being subsidised under a special arrangement with the Labour Department and the Main Highways Board. The men employed on the job were receiving 18s 9d a day and were being transported free of charge to and from the deviation each day. At the rate the. men were carrying out the work, it is stated, it would have far exceeded the estimated cost and would have taken a considerable time to complete. The council has now Decided to purchase machinery to complete the job, which it is anticipated will be finished within the estimate.
