' HOKITIKA CLUB’S CARNIVAL The swimming carnival held at the 'Municipal Baths last evening was reminiscent of old times when there was a large attendance of the public present. The Municipal Band enlivened proceedings prior to the commencement of the carnival with an enjoyable programme of music. An innovation at the. carnival was the broadcasting of events by Mr E. Heenan, through , the broadcasting plant installed by Mr Ben Hunter, of Robert Francis Ltd. The special attraction of the carnival was the appearance of Miss K. Grey (New Zealand intermediate champion), and Miss J. Finlayson (former Auckland'intermediate champion). Both girls gave, excellent demonstrations, and took part in the various events, Miss Grey winning the ladies’ 50 yards handicap and the open 100 yards handicap. Mr L. Moorhouse, of Christchurch, the former New Zealand and Olympic backstroke champion, was present at the carnival, and he gave an,excellent demonstration of the various styles of stvimming. Boring the evoning ) the various trophies won at. the carnival were presented by Mr E. Heenan, ineluding the Newman jCup, won this year by A. Ballinger. Mr- Heenan, on behalf of the Club, .expressed the Club’s thanks for various medals presented by the 'Oilowing : —Mrs Shaw (Red Lion Hotel), Misses I. and’M. Devaney, Messrs J. j. Mclntosh, <H.
