Camille Chauteinps has resigned. Chautemps, after an impassioned speech in the Chamber in which he appealed for social peace and a realistic financial outlook, beckoned to his Ministers who all rose and walked out. Chautemps said that constitutional issues prompted his resignation and not recent events which had admittedly moved rapidly and obscurely. “Fiance is not experiencing pressing treasury needs,” he. said. “My successor will find several millions of francs in the bank. Moreover, sums falling due are amply covered nor does any exchange crisis exist.” He insisted that he intended using extended powers only in the interests of the country, his idea being to place the Government beyond the reach of any chance incident.
