MONTHLY MEETING HELD. Cis E. Tiechehnami, H. L, Michel. U. T. Parry and T. W. Duff attended a meeting of the Hokitika .Borough Council which was held at 8 o’clock last evening in the Town Hall. His Worship, the Mayor (Mr G. Perry) presided. Apologies were received from Crs E. L. Park, A. Thompson, A. R. Elcock and G. Heinz. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From R. A. Campbell, Consult. Engineer, certifying that subject to minor work still to be done that the new Pump House had been completed to his satisfaction and that final payment may be made to the Contractor. —Received. .It. A. Campbell, Consulting Engineer, instructions with regard to the erection of the pumps.—-Received. Hon Secretary Automobile Association, (Westland Branch), asking that when the installation of the water mains has been completed that stops he taken to expedite the sealing of the Borough roads.— Received. Resolved to advise the Association that the suggestion was the Council’s intention.

In response to all application received from live ratepayers residing-in Weld, and Hall Streets (lower) that the foot pa Hi between Hall and Bealey Streets along Weld Street be raised and the tar-sealed footpath be extended to it, if was decided that a report he obtained from the overseer of the P.W. committee as to the feasibility of doing same and an estimate of the cost involved made.

The Treasurer reported that for the month ending February 10, receipts totalled £ll9B 2s 11(1 and payments £982 19s 9d.

The Foreman, (Mr F. Chester man), submitted his report for the month as follows :• —• Mr J. Cutbush with the subsidised workers continued laying the water mains, chiefly on the north of Hampden Street. Four inch Everite pipes were laid in the following Streets, except Bealey Street, in which six inch pipes were laid : Davie Street, Quay to Weld Street, 7 chains; Weld Street, Davie to Jollie Street, 4} chains; Weld Street, Davie to Rolleston Street, 6 chains’; Livingstone Street, 'Hampden towards Park Street, 7 chains; Jollie Street, Hampden to Park Street, 11} chains; Davie Street, Hampden to Park Street, 11} chains; Park Street, Jollie to Davie Street, t> chains; Park Street, Davie to Roileston Street, 6 chains; Rolleston Street, Hampden to Park Street, 11} chains; Park Street, Rolleston to Sale Street, 6 chains; Sale Street, Hampden to Park Street, 11} chains; Park Street, Sale to Brittan Street, 6 chains; Brittan Street, Hampden to Park Street, 11} chains; Park Street, Brittan to Hall Street, 6 chains; Hall Street, Hampden to Park Street, 11} ehains; Park Street, Hall to Bealey Street, 6 chains ; Bealey Street, Hampden to Park Street, 11} chains.

The following maintenance work was carried out under Mr Cropp : After New Year’s Eve the streets were cleaned up of rubbish and carted to the dump and burned, growth was cut. in Sale Street between Hampden and Park Streets, and in Livingstone Street between the Quay and Stafford Street and the drain cleaned out. The street from Hampden Street to the Dunedin Hotel was gravelled with beach gravel, and in Stafford Street between Revell and Tailored Streets. Pot holes were filled with asphalte in Weld Street, between the Clock Tower and the Railway. Fitzherbert Street was graded with the Government grader between Weld and Stafford Streets, and tar sealed, this section wants more tar put on owing to the gravel being too coarse. A section of footpath in Fitzherbert. Street On the'east- side between Stafford and Hampden Streets was gravelled. Tar sealing was carried out at the intersection o.f Weld and Fitzherbert Streets,' Bealey and Stafford Streets, Fitzherbert and Hampden Streets, and 1? chains of footpath in Stafford Street between Bealey'and Hall Streets was tar sealed.

One day was spent- on the Lake road repairing leaks, and a water supply was put in to Mr Fahey’s garage in Wharf Street.

The excavated wooden pipes in various Streets were collected and carted to the Town Hall yard, and the 1} galvanised pipes taken to the gas, works yards, an excavation was made across the intersection of Stafford and Sewell Streets and nine inch concrete pipes laid, the old wooden drain having collapsed.

The average depth of water in the reservoir for the month was Bft, 7in.

ABATTOIR REPORT

The following stock were slaughtered at the abattoirs during the month of January: —Cows 52, heifers 35;, bullock's 52, sheep 271, lambs 131, pigs 23, calves 5. There were condemned during the month, 2 cows, l heifer, 1 bullock, and 2 sheep. Fees collected during the month totalled £BS 2s, compared with £76 18s for the corresponding month last year. —Report received and adopted.

Approval was given the Town Clerk to open a separate account in the Bank of N.Z. for the purpose of entering all monies derived from the sale of second-hand wooden water pipes, as required by Section 20 of the Finance Act, 1934. The report of Mr. ,D. Stevenson on public buildings in the Borough was received and adopted, and payment of £1 Is inspection fee was given. The tender of the Hokitika Guardian and Evening Star Coy., for the printing of the Borough roll, was accepted as the lowest of two tenders. It was decided that the Botanical Gardens be given free to the Government for State housing purposes, provided that they carry out reading and draining work required to put trie sections in proper .order for house erection.

A report by the Town Clerk on the compilation of the Borough Roll was reemved and adopted. It was reported that 325 electors had been deleted from the roll.

Regarding a suggestion that the Council purchase a lorry to replace the present horse and dray system employed, it was, after discussion, decided to undertake a complete investigation into the matter, costs of the present and suggested systems to he compared, Cr. Heinz’s report on tar-sealing works carried out in the Borough was deferred owing to tin* Councillor in question being absent. The Town Clerk and Cr. Parry were requested to report on the purchase of an electric hoist for the abba toil's. It was stated that one firm had submitted a quote in regard to same*, the amount being £194 10s. A plan for a proposed drainage system for north Revolt Street, was submitted by Mr J. Macfnrlnne, and after consideration by members it wn« resolved that an easement be obtained from Mr .1. Cameron for permission to put a drain through his section to connect with the Tancred Street drain. A vote of thanks to the chair brought the meeting to a close at 9.30' p.m. i
