MONTHLY MEETING HELD

His Worship, tl/e Mayor, (Mr G. A. Perry) presided at. the monthly meeting of tlie .Hokitika Borough Council, which was held last ..evening a 8 o'clock, the following members being present: Crs L. Michel, T. W. Duff, G. Heinz, E-. Teiehelmann, F. L. Park and A. 11. El cock. Apologies were received front Crs H. T. Parry and A. Thompson.

From New* Zealand Standards Institute, advising particulars of proceedings of conference re standardization of Local Body by-laws, it' being proposed to standardize within six: months building by-laws and later .to go into the matter of drainage-and plumbing and sewerage. —Received, and decided to wait for the, standard-by-laws.

From same, forwarding,draft specifications in regard to hides no. 1059.—Received, .

From the Municipal Association, Wei-: lington, asking that'any comments in regard to the standardization of hides bo forwarded to the Association to be dealt with by its representative on the New Zealand Standards Institute.—Received. From -the Secretary, Employment Department, forwarding particulars of Christmas bonus payable to certain relief workers. The instruction shows that men employed by tin’s ‘Council under Scheme 15 are not eligible to receive the Christm-rts bonus.—Received. (Hokitika, detailing the various fees payable in respect of four kerbside petrol pumps and asking the Council to consider a reduction in the annual license fee of each pump.—Received and resolved that a reduction of £2 be made in license fee as from December Ist.

Fiom J, P. Hagar and other residents, Lower Livingstone street, drawing attention. to the growth of blackberries and gorse in that area between Weld and Stafford streets and asking-that the matter be given attention.—Received; referred to Public Works Committee.

Cmmissioper of Transport, advising that the law providing for the 30 miles per hoar limit in Boroughs also empowers the Hon Minister to exclude any road or.street from the speed limit and that this is intended to be applied where .there is. no great, .extent, .of builtup area, and where it would consequently not he reasonable for the speed limit to bq enforced, and further that it is considered that the following sections of the State- /Highway passing through Hokitika should be excluded from this restriction as to. speed :

(1) At the northern end for a distance of 10 chains from the boundary to a point north of the junction with Cemetery Road.

| the street between the sections 18, 52, 48 and 16, 'l'own of. llqkitika, that the Magistrate had continued. the decision of the electors that the street be stopped and that a permanent record of the stopping had been made by the Chief Surveyor and accordingly the street is now stopped. Also asking that the Council pursuant to section 194 (1) of the. M.C. Act, 1933, appoint a competent valuer to value the portion of land now stopped in order that it may he translerred to Robert Ford and Co., Ltd., «’• Ifylward McDonnell, the owners of the adjoining, sections.—Received; resolved to lie left in the hands of the Ma,\ to attend to. Tiie Borough Foreman (F. W. Ckestennan) reported the following works were carried o'Ut during the

month

Mr Outbush and myself,, with the subsidise,! workers continued on the Hampden street water main irom Revell street to Sale Street, where we reached on the 3rd • we then split the, men into .two parties, Cutbush taking one party, and myself the other. Air Lutbush started in Stafford street from Rolleston St., laying-up to Livingstone St., and then across tne reserve 1 to the pump, to allow the water to the town mains, while 1 started continuing from the Hau Hau hill towards town. On the 19th Mr Cutbush, having connected the line at the pump, joined me in crossing the swaiqp, and by the ‘2stli we reached the eastern boundary, where we put in tuo necessary castings, and shifted the valves, and then continued laying the mam down Hampden street; and at the end of the month reached,Holiman street. Maintenance work Mas carried on by Mr Cropp, tliy, following , \v orks,.,typing, were raised and painted , in , various streets where the new mains were laid, two days were spent checking and counting the. old pipes, several days were spent along tne pipe line to tuc lake. Water services were lvimwed at Mr Fowler’s, and Jackson’s, in North .Revell street, and at Mr Gooeh’s in Flail streqt. Burst pipes were repaired in Hampden street. Hall street, and Tudor, street. Growth was cleared off a section of Hoffman street, on the north side of Hampden street. Footpaths were cleaned in ’1 ancreci street between the Quay and Hamilton street, in Sewell Street between Weld and Stafford streets, in Stafford street between Rolleston and Davie streets 0 n the north side, in Hampden street between Fitzherbert street and the railway, and in Hampden street from Livingstone to joille streets. The average depth of water in tne reservoir for the month was 8 feet Tin. —Received and adopted. The Town Clerk was authorised to pay all wages up to the eikl of the month before Xmas as usual. in connection with an application for a stove to be installed and a new chimney be built at the abattoirs, it was decided that" the building of the chimney be proceeded with, while the chairman of the Public Works Committeo was instructed to ascertain the cost of installation of the stove. A petition was received from several residents of. Upper Revell street, between Hampden and Park streets, asking that the Council instal a drain to carry away rain water which at present lies in the low-lying areas. After a little discussion, in which it was. disclosed that Mr Macfarlane hat made a survey of the road levels ami had. proposed a .drain be taken down through private sections to Tailored street; it was. decided that be be instructed to make a survey of .the best line of levels for a drain, prepare a plan and estimate the cost of same, and also the complications in-, volved.

The slaughterman applied for the Council’s permission to accept wages in lieu of his leave, which he was unable to take as no one could be obtained in his place. It was resolved that the application he granted. It was decided that persons, he warned against depositing rubbish and offensive matter on the beach, and that any person guilty of doing such he prosecuted. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the business at 9.15'p.m.
