BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHEY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council was held last evening at the Town Hall. Present—His Worship the Mayor (G. A. Perry, Esq.), Crs T. W. Duff, E. Teichelmann, G. Heinz, and A. Thompson. Apologies were made for Cl's Park, Elcock, Parry and Michel. The minutes were confirmed. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Hokitika Sub-Centre Red Cros s Society, expressing thanks to the Council for donation to the fund—Received.

From the Kanieri Electric, Ltd., advising that 60 c.p. lights had been installed at the corner of Park and Jollie streets, and the corner of Hoff mm and Hampden streets, and also about hallway up the hill to the cemetery.—Received.

From the Inangahua County Council, advising a proposed presentation to the Hon. Minister of Public Works, and asking if the Council is prepared to contribute.—Received; £2 2s voted.

From Miss V A. Ross, application for annual leave.—Received ; request granted. From the Blackball Picnic. Committee application for the use of Cass Square for their annual picnic on Saturday, the 19th February, 1938.—Received, and granted. From Hokitika Fire Board, asking that the installation of fire plugs in upper Park street and also in upper Sewell street be carried out as soon as possible.—-Received. From the Municipal Association, advising the difficulty experienced by the Government Housing Department through the variation in building bylaws amongst the local 'bodies of the Dominion, and asking for co-operation with the Department as far as possible.—Received.

From the Canterbury Progress League, Westland Committee, asking what progress has been made by the Borough in respect of building by-laws, and that authority be granted for planting shrubs and ornamental trees on the streets in the residential part of the towu.—Received.

From Bi.\ Gaines, application for street, stand at, the corner of Revell and Weld streets for Xmas season to conduct a dart game. Received • granted at 10/- per day. From E. M. Cameron, application tor permission to instal a septic tank on section 1104, Park street. —Received : request granted. From the Sisters of Mercy, application for permission to instal a septic tank on part section 3362, Hokitika Convent --Received ; request granted. From the Manager, National Bank, Hokitika, application for permission to instal a septic tank on section No. 6, Hamilton and Revell streets.—Received ; request granted. From the members of the s family of the late W. A. Thompson tendering thanks for expression of sympathy.— Received.

From the N.Z. Refrigerating. Co., advising ' that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of October, viz. : 126 sheep, 4 lambs.—Received.

From the State Advances Corporation, Wellington, notifying that sand is being removed from the beach at the corner of Park and Revell streets, thereby 'endangering the sectio,n at high tide.—Received; a warning to he given against the practice.

From the Chairman Local Government (Amalgamation Scheiiies) Bill Committee, Wellington, advising that a special parliamentary committee will hear evidence from local bodies and others desirous of placing before the committee their views on the principles and provisions of the Bill, and that notifications to be heard must reach Wellington before the 18th inst., and a date will then be fiyed for hearing the evidence. —Received. From the Department of Agriculture forwarding particulars re grading of baconers.—Received.

From the District Engineer, Public Works Department, Greymouth, advising that, the matter of turnouts in the Hokitika Railway Bridge had been referred for consideration with supplementary estimates at a basis of £1 for £1 and that the cost per turnout would be approximately £I,OOO if wide enough to pass a train.—Received.

From A. T. Gumming and four other local butchers asking that the Council accept the offer of the N.Z. Refrigerating Co., 're purchase of runners.—Received and acceptance approved.

From Wm. Jeffries and Co., application under Section 54 of the Health Act, 1920. for consent to carry on an Offensive Trade in the Borouyh. viz: drying and salting of hides and skins.—Received. Granted; subject to approval of Health Officer. From M. H. From W. J. Richards, application to lease part of Municipal Reserve No. 537 Sale Street with a frontage of 66ft.— Received: request granted.

From the Secretary, Hokitika Businessmen’s Association asking Hint consideration bo given to the framing of building by-laws for the Borough. —Received.

From Hokitika Shimming Flub asking for necessary attention to baths at cost of £l2.—Receivecl: request granted. From W. H. Thompson, application to transfer lease of reserve. —Received and approved.

REPORTS. f The Treasurer reported receipts £509/5/6; payments £1452/15/8; credit .balance £1591/8/3. Waterworks payments £2426/18/9; credit balance £4079/4/I.—Received. Accounts amounting to £444/9/4 general accounts anti £1440/8/8 waterworks accounts, were passed for payment.

• The Public Committee reported on seve r al small matters referred to them and their recommendations were approved. The formal dog tax registration fees for the ensuing year were approved. It was resolved to apply to the Hokitika Savings Bank for the right to take off 12ft of land at right-of-way leading to Beach Street. Foreman's Report.

The Foreman (Mr F. W. Chesterman) reported the following works were carried out during the month: Mr J. Outbush and myself with subsidised workers continued laying the Everite pipes for the new water mains, and up to the 21st a distance of 6U-£ chains were laid in the following streets:—In Stafford Street, Brit-tan to Hall Street, 6 chains; Hall to Bealley Street, 6 chains; Sale to Rolleston, 63 chains; in Hall Street,. Stafford to Hampden Street, 10£ chains ; in Brittan Street, Stafford to Hampden Street, 101 chains; in Sale Street, Stafford to Hampden Street, 101 chains; in Rolleston Street, Stafford to Hampden Street 101 chains.

From the 21st we started on the Hampden Street 8 inch main laying the bitumen lined pipes, starting from Revell Street, up Hampden Street, and by the end of the month reached Sale Street a distance of 39 chains, making the total distance for the month 991 chains.

Mr Cropp with the assistance of two men, carried o n the maintenance works, the following being carried out. Bealey Street was chipped the full width between Stafford and Hampden Streets, and the spoil carted aiid spread along Stafford Street into depressions on the south side.

Water services were put in at Mr Knowles’ in Park Street, Mr Coles, in Beach Street, and the Blue Star Taxis in Revell Street, and the water service at Mr Oliver’s in Hampden Street was renewed. A concrete crossing was put in to Mr H. McMullan’s in Fitzherbert Street, and a gravel crossing was put in to Mr R. Bell’s in Weld Street. Pot holes were filled with asphalt in Revell Street, Weld Street, Sewell Street and the intersection of Fitzherbert Street. Park Street drain was cleaned out on the north side between Hall and Sale Streets, and on the south side between Hall and Brittan Streets, and : Brittan Street drain was cleaned out between Hampden and Park Streets on the west side. 1 The intersections of Sale and Stafford, Bealey anu Stafford, Hall and Stafford, am i Brittan and Stafford were levelled where the new water mains aere laid.

An air valve was put in at the encl of the £ inch pipe at Mr Rutland's in Bark Street, and the water table from Fitzherbert Street, to the railway in Bark Street cleaned out. The valve at the corner of Park and Revell Street was repaired. Leaks tvere repaired m Stafford Street, Hampden Street, and on Gibson Quay, one day was spent on the pipe line between the Reservoir and the Kanieri Forks repairing leaks, and also a day cleaning out the swimming baths.
