The admission that he took his wife to the pictures alone perhaps fifteen times when they were living apart m Christchurch, was made in cross-exam-ination by Radley to-day } but the reason he did so, he said, was to prevent her from committing suicide as she had threatened.

Questioned about ‘‘Mrs X,” petitioner said she was a widow and ho ; had first met her at a bridge party in Christchurch. It was some time later that correspondence began between them. “Mrs X” was then in Auckland, but later went to Christchurch and looked after the children of petitioner’s brother. “I was not in lovo with “Mrs X” at that time but I was getting that way/’ said petitioner. He added that while in England lie corresponded w’ith her as he was hoping to marry her a s soon as possible after his return to New Zealand in February, 1936. He haa arranged to discuss the position with her, also with her father. When he was leaving England he handed his wife’s return ticket and £SO to a Mr Wood to be given to Mrs Radley after petitioner had sailed. His wife had never intimated that she was worried aoout bis leaving her in England without a ticket. He had paid for ber passage order before he left-New Zealand. Re-examined by Mr Finlay, he said he did not hand over the ticket because his wife was threatening to have him arrested but-because something was unnecessarily worrying her.
