BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETINC.

The Hokitika. Borough Council met last evening at 8 o’clock. There were present: Crs E. Teichelmann (voted to the chair), T. W. Duff, E. Park, G. Heinz, A. Thompson. Apologies were made for the Mayor, Crs -Michel, Parry and Elcock. The minutes were confirmed and correspondence outward approved.

Inward Correspondence

Front the Commissioner of Transport, Wellington, advising that owing -o the number of road accidents that the matter of issuing suitable poster.'is receiving attention, and asking foi the co-operation of the Local Bodies in the direction of displaying posters in the Council’s buildings or in other prominent positions.—Received ; referred to Inspector for report.

From the N.Z. Refrigerating Co., ad vising that the following quantities ol meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of August, vie.. : Mil dieep.—Received. From the Hon Secretary, N.Z. Centennial Committee, WestJaml, re Con tennial.—Received. From the Department of Agriculture, forwarding draft of meat gi ailing regulations, 1937.—Received. Faun \Y. H. Thompson, application for permission to install a septic tank in section 1284 at the corner of Hump lien and Hoffman streets.—Received mil approved.

From W. Connor, slaughterhouse, ibattoirs, application for twelve days annual leave from the 4th October.— Received and approved. From S. P. Brown, Rolleston street, application for half cost of boundary fence.-—Received ; referred to Works Committee to report.

From Geoijge O’Brien and others, 'kirk street, application for a street light at the corner of Park and Jo!iu streets.—Received ; referred to Work Committee to report. From T. W. Wall notifying that Ill's taking over the box factory and ask ing for the continuation of the extra ordinary water supply under its exist ing conditions.—Received and approv ed.

From Messrs Stewart, Johnson Hough and Campbell, solicitors fo trustees, forwarding £lB/13/- being half yearly interest under the W. J. Butler bequest for the Cass Square Fund.—Received ; Reserves Committee to report on expenditure of fund.

From Hokitika Harbour B ard, ad vising the District Engineer’s recoin mendations in regard to the bloeki 'g o' the mouth of the fiver; and asking Council’s consent to transfer men em ployed under Scheme 13 for-a fe w days to assist in opening up the mouth of I he river.—Received.

From Wm, Wilson, agent for Mrs V I. Marshall, •application for permission to sub-divide section 32.) Revel street. —Received; request granteel.

From Hokitika Fire Brigade, advis ing that the Brigaele strongly objects to the reduction in the number of fin. plugs as some have been removed from the positions which were most suitable for the use of the Brigade in ease ol emergency.—Received. From Lawrence Beavies, Silverdale application, for permission to play a steel guitar in the street during his tour, the purpose of which is to raise funds to build a new mission ship.—Ro eeived ; request granted. purled .there we'e slaughtered (luring August:—26 cows, 28 heifers, 72 bullocks, 114 sheep. 6 pigs, 9 calves. Condemned 1 cow, i pig. Fees I'oj- month £57 5s 6d as compared with £62 -for the corresponding period last year. Keeeiveil.

Accounts amounting to £6(16 10s 6tl general account, £962 'Bs 7d water works account wore passed for payment. A request for lie’iewal of a new range at tin' abattoir collate was referred to the Abnl loir Committee to report.

FOREMAN'S report

The Borough foreman reported as follows on works carried out u~aiing the mooth :

Mr Cutluisli and myself have been engaged .with relief workers in excavating and removing the wooden pipes from the water mains and laying the Everile pipes in their place.

Tlk> weather has been favourable and the trenching fairly good except nj the intersections of the streets where till' excavating was very hard in places. Tlio progress made was approximately 120 chains, aid in the following streets : Tailored Street —Quay to Hamilton Street (> chains; Camp Street—-Guay to Tancred Street 6 chai-ns; Hamilton Street -Revel! {<) Sewell Street 11 chains : Weld -Street —Revel I to Boa ley Street 22 chains; Sewell Street—Quay to Hampden Street 51 chains; Stafford Street —Revoll to Sewell Street 8 chains: Gibson Quay—Sewell to .>ea!cy street 12 chains; Fitzherherj Street Quay to Stafford Street 19 chains; Stafford St— Fitzherbcrt to Healey Streea 5t chains.

Mr Cropp was engaged on maintenance work, tin' following work being out:—

Water services put in at Mr J. Havin'* in FitHier/hert St. at Mr Cameron’s in Park St, and the water service renewed at the Central Hotel.

Brittan St near the intersection of Stafford St outside Dr Ail ken’s residence was levelled and gravelled, one chain of footpath "'as formed and gravelled in Tudor St on the west side of Filsherbert St. and 2V chains of footpath idea lied in Fitzherbert St. north of Tudor St. Twenty foot of Bin. wouil-
