MAGISTRATE'S COURT

SITTING AT HOKITIKA.

Tho following business was transacted at the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court held this morning by Mr Raymond Ferner S.M. Motor Breaches.

Police v. Leslie A. Haul!, charged with driving a motor lorry at Hokitika in Stafford Street, and failing to give wav on the intersection of Sale Street to a car approaching from his right. Defendant appeared and pleaded not guilty. After evidence was taken the magistrate convicted the defendant an,i oHe red him to pav costs 10 -. Reginald P. Chibnall, District Iroffie Inspector v. Harold Parker, charged with driving a motor car at Three Alile after sunset, not displaying lights. Defendant was convicted and fined £1 with 10/- costs. Same v. Lawrence Gooch, charged with uncrating at Harihari, a niu.ut truck fitted with a windscreen which obstructed the druer’s view forwardDefendant appeared and pleaded not guilty. The Inspector in evidence/ stated that the windscreen was half cut away and that half was fitted with n piece of three-plv wood. Defendant stated the lorry belonged to the International Harvster and wason loan- The windscreen on the truck was a. very large one and the driver s view was not impaired by the three plv wood on the smashed part of the screen. In the Magistrate’s opinion the s«‘-' tion of the act made it unsafe to con \ict and for that reason the information was dismissed

same v, Stephen Havill operating at Hokitika a jnotor lorry not carrying a warrant of fitness Mr M. B. James appeared for defendant and pleaded guilty. Ho was convicted and fined IV'/- and costs.

Wandering StocK.

Same v. Eunice Mitchell, charged afc Mikonui, with permitting three head of stock to wander. There was no appearance of defendant wlio was convicted and fined £1 and 10/- costs. Thomas R. Chesterman faced a similar charge brought by the Inspector, of permitting six head of cattle to wander on the Kokatahi road at Kanieri. Defendant appeared and pleaded not guilty. Defendant was fined £1 and cost:;.

W. E. Gavlor v. Josepr Roberts, charged with allowing a caw to wander in Park Street, Hokitika, unattended. Defendant was convicted tnd fired 10/and costs with solicitors fee of 10/6. The reason for the smaller fine in this case was because of a solicitor’s fees being involved. On similar charges, brought hv the Borough Inspector, Bridget E. Coyle, was charged (two charges) with permitting two cows and two horses to vandor unattended <°Jnd Patrick Kirn an with allowing a cow to wander on 20 .nd 23 of August, unattended in Fitzherbert and Park Streets. Tho defendant, Bridget Coyle, was fined 10./- and with solicitor’s fee 10/6 and the defendant Ivirwan, was convicted and fined ">O/- and costs on each charge with 10/G solicitor s fee.

Civil Case.

' Judgment for plaintiff by default was riven in a case in which J. J. Hcvddt brought proceedings against Thomas Hargreaves for £6/5/11. Court costs and solicitor’s fees were also allowed.
