SAFETY OF BATHERS.

SYDNEY, August 6: The Minister of \Vorks and Loca' Government, Mr Spooner, said this Week .that the Government had de ided to invite tenders for a contract to mesh ’ the beaches between Tarrerroey and Port Hacking against sharks. ;

The work would not begin later than De ember 1, and the Government would offer a Subsidy of £IO,OOO. a year for two years, < which was : double the subsidy offered during 1935 and 1936.. ; ‘.‘lf it is found impossible,” Mr Spooner added, ‘‘to secure a.contractor who will provide the tiavvlers and the plant necessary for the undertaking, the Government will Consider putting boats into commission to carry out t ie trawling after De ember as .an .experi ment tor the rest! of the simmer. ' ‘‘However, the Government is not anxious to do this, because of the di ficulty of disposing of the catches ex eept by the establishment of a fish industry, which the Government would not undertake.”
