From R. G. Day asking that- footpath be constructed at the corner of Fitzherbert and Tudor streets to his section.—Received. From Park, Murdoch and James, agents for the owners of sections 16, 18, 20, 48 and 52, town of Hokitika, pointing out that these sections comprise the Occidental Hotel property arid it is .necessary to erect a new hotel building adn asking whether the Council will close the existing right-of-way which separates sections 16 and 48 on the one side from sections 18, 20 and 52 on the other sid6 rind transfer the closed right-of-way to the owners of the. aforesaid sections. As a consideration their clients are prepared to grant in lieu of the said right-of-way, a right-of-way from their portion pf sections 52 and 20 as shown coloured red oil tlie plan. The expenses will be borne •by .their clients. The width of tlie; existing right-of-way is 12 links and the;, proposed right-of-way is 15 links,— ceived; request costs to be paid by applicant.

From James O’Brien, Esq, M.P., advising that the Employment •■Department is prepared to offer. £3 for .£1 subsidy for any work that Local Bodies decide -.to go on with and in cases of smaller Bodies whose revenue might prevent their supplying .their share of employing men in* their district, and even more liberal subsidy might be forthcoming. .The number of men who can be employed on this basis on the Coast is fifty.—Received; consideration deferred;

From the Health Inspector, notification of work performed during the month of June, 1937, and advising one case of Poliomyelitis.—Received.

From Chairman, Hokitika Fire Board, advising that the Fire Board proposes erecting a hew Fire Station on the present site and asking that the necessary steps be taken to have the site vested for the purposes of a Fire Station. The area required is a frontage of 50ft. in Hamilton street and a deptli of SOft.—Received; Town Clerk to take action to have area vested in Council.

The Finance,Committee recommended that the salary of the Borough Inspector be increased to £4,Bs 4d per week; the present water guage keeper to continue temporarily at 2s ,6d per day ; that the wages of the reserves caretaker be contiritied at 35 hours per .week at £3 17s 3d per week, with right to private work.—Received and approved. . j RATING PROPOSALS ! .:. ( .. • ‘ ' 'The Town " Clerk- submitted the estimates of receipts and paymenl| and racing, proposals for the year, ending March 31, 1938, as-follows The Local Bodies’’ Labourers Award has reduced the hours of the outside', staff to 40 hours a week and increased, the wages and overtime. Prior to the Award if three of the staff were engaged for four hours on a Saturday afternoon in j repairing a burst in a water main the cost for overtirrie was £l,3s 9d. Under the Award tlie cost would b’e £2 4s 4d, iii increase on four hours work of £1 Os 7d. Tlie matter of overtime will therefore be an anxiety until the new mains are installed, in preparing the estimates the expenditure -has been kept at a bare maintenance level, there being no • provision for capital \Vork except £177 for the piping of two drains, which’is an urgent and necessary work.

FOREMAN’S REPORT • The Borough foreman reported as follows on work carried out during the month.,- 1 - More than half the month was occupied with the new pipes aiid fittings in unloading from the railway trucks, and the m.v. Hokitika. The remaining lot of- the bitumen lined Bhi. pipes arrived, and on June 7 started tin*' loading. The number was 317’-ranging from 18 to 23 feet in length. ’W£ finl# 1 ed distributing the required- number along the route, and the remainder we

stacked at the Borough stables yard. The Fverite pipes were stacked in the Town Hall yard, and at the- gas works. We are now clearing the line and expect; to start laying the main from the reservoiivjby the end of the-month. . A new 'water connection was put in tc a new residence in Livingstone street for the Hokitika-Kanieri .Sawmills Co. j Three chains of concrete-lined Hume pipes were laid in Fitzherbert street. ■These pipes were in stock and were used ito connect on to the 13 chains, laid down about twelve months ago. | Cl&mp§ were put on burst pipes in Weld street, Sewell street and Brjttari street. Two days were spent on the pipe-line '.between the reservoir and the Lake, repairing. Two days were spent carting river beach gravel on to the streets, two drays being used : A. drain in Bark street wasf blocked, and was cleaned out. A drain at the intersection of Sewell street and Gibson Qiiayi-was also cleaned out. A sman. shed was erected along side the road below, the ‘reservoir for keeping tools rind gear in. The average depth .of water in the reservoir for the month was 3ft 3in.— Received.

GENERAL It was resolved Lo defer consideration of the erection of a stop bank on Gib'son Quay, until a later date. The Public Works Committee, were authorised to carry the read into Hoffmann street from Hampden street for a distance of five chains at the cost of about £25. The Council rose at 9.30 p.m. I
