SUSTENANCE MEN
860 OFFERED FULL TIMEWORK (Per Press Association—Copyright). CHRISTCHURCH, July 8. About 860 men in Christchurch, now on sustenance are within the next year to be offered full-time employment at standard rates of pay by the local bodies in and around the city. The men will be employed for five days weekly for periods ranging from two months to four months, in accordance with a scheme recently outlined I by the Acting-Minister of Labour, Hon P. C. Webb. This was announced tonight by Mr W. Bromley, liaison officer, 'attached to the .Employment j Division of the Department of Labour I who met representatives of the local bodies to-day, and explained the scheme to them. About one-third of the number will begin work soon, and when this grPUp lias completed its period of full-time work it will return to part-time work or sustenance and another group will then be absorbed.
