A SERIOUS CHARGE
HARBOURING AN ESCAPEE, j (Tei Press Association—Copyright). ! CHRISTCHURCH, July 8. j There was nothing sinister in this case. Those people erred through kind/ ness of heart, said counsel, Air 11. H, Hanna, in the Magistrate’s Court, this morning, when a mother and son, Gladys Orchard and Norman Frederick Orchard, were charged with knowingly harbouring a girl who had escaped from Bnrwood Girls’ Home. Accused were convicted and ordered to pay costs. Sub-Inspector McLean said there had been a number of escapes from the home and the help of the community was expected, in returning the girls to that and other institutions. He added; that accused did not at first know the girl was an escapee, but kept her even after they found out. -- j Magistrate Levvey .said the public! j must be made aware of the fact that i there was a severe penalty—a fine ol | £SO or three months—for that type of offence. Thi s shows the serious view taken of this sort of thing by the legislature.
