In the Magistrate's Court at Greymouth, yesterday, before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., Joseph Jackson amt John James Cressey were charged with the theft of coal valued at 3d, the property of the Railways Department. Both pleaded guilty. The Magistrate pointed out that there were two previous convictions against Jackson, for theft. The amount he was now charged with having stolen was not large, hut Jackson must understand that he must keep his hands off other people’s property. He was liable to three ] months’ hard labour on the present charge. If he came before the Court again, he would l:e put away for a substantial term. He would be fined £l. The Magistrate said that petty pilfering must ho checked. Cressv was old enough to know bettor than to commit theft. As it was his first offence, lie would be fined 10s.
