On the application of Detective-Sergeant H. E. ‘Knight, accused was remanded in custody, until Monday next. Five men and three youths were placed in permanent positions this week, through the efforts of the Grey- | mouth Placement Office. One of the youths was placed as an apprentice nautical engineer. Two men were found casual work. In addition seven men were found work with the Public Works Department. William Rae, a single man, aged 25 years, of Derby street, Westport, was admitted to the Buller Hospital late yesterday afternoon, with severe head, injuries. When he was jacking,up a log on the skids at the Maekley Sawmill, Berlins, where he is employed, the jack slipped and Rae fell, striking his head heavily on the jack. His condition is serious. Mr Landreth, chief engineer of the Employment Division of the Department of Labour, hi s assistant Mr Jupp and the goldfields supervisor Mr McKinnon inspected the areas of Ross Deep Levels on Friday. His report will go before the Minister on his return from England. It is understood Mr McKinnon will make an inspection later ot Rangitoto silver mine.
