CRICKET

•N.Z. ON TOUR CLAiKORGAN'S GOOD SCORE. (From special correspondent of United Press Association with the team). (Received this day at 1.30 p.m.) CARDIFF, May 17. A billiard table wicket from which the ball came through at an easy pace and height nullified a manful effort of persevering howlers and enabled the County to secure a lead before tbelargest crowd that has ever watched a touring team at Cardiff. The New Zealanders began by capturing four wickets in just over an hour, and then Duckfield and Smart in a fine fifth wicket partnership put the County in a strong position. Duckfield played correct cricket for three hours and scored a sound century, including a dozen fours. Smart batted for an hour and a half and hit eight fours. H. Davies was aggressive, hitting five fours.

Six bowlers stuck gamely to the difficult task. Dunning was remarkably steady for long periods. Roberts was also consistently accurate, and tooktwo quick wickets at the tail end.; Vivian kept the scoring rate down by clever flighting. Moloney turned slows sharply, and was not afraid to give the ball air. Weir secured a useful wicket with a new ball. Page bowled to a leg field. Tindall had ,a great day behind the stumps. The fielding generally was excellent, especially runsaving on the boundary. Hadlee and Wallace fell to good slip catches off the fast bowler, and Kerr was yorked when going well. Weir and Moloney carefully played out time. New Zealand may have a troublesome period early to-morrow, due to the morning dew, which is usually experienced here. , There was perfect holiday weather to-day, and the attendance was six thousand.
