INTEREST OF CRICKETER
INSURANCE CASE REFERENCE!
LONDON, April 17,
; “Why a man worried about money matters, should not unbend occasionally about cricket 1 cannot understand,” said Lord Wright in-,the Court of Appeals to-day. Aif? I He is hearing a cross-appeal in which the question of sanity. arises. •*-. 1 Airs Delapoer Beresford /cross-ap-pealed against a jury’s decision that her uncle, Major Rowlandson, who shpt himself in June, 1934, was sane. Life insurance of £42,469 is involved, j The references to cricket were contained ; n letters addressed to the manager (Mr Bushby) of ', the tonring Australian cricketers in 1934. Diseasing the. question of Rowlandson’s sanity, Airs Beresford’s counsel said that these letters, besides complimenting the team on its performances, referred to the Lama of Tibet-, Buddha, and the Archbishop of, Canterbury—the last in regard to “praying for rain when Australia is batting.” Counsel contended that such letterswere written while Rowlandson was worried bv his inability to pay his insurance -premiums. They revealed inconsistFncy, which was evidence that his mind was unbalanced.' ‘ '
Counsel said -Rowlandson attempted to commit suicide in 1927, and there was also evidence of. an attempt in 1931. The hearing was adjourned. .
