BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING

The Hokitika Borough Council held the monthly meeting last evening at 8 o’clock. There were present, Mr G. A. Perry (Mayor), C’rs A. <R. Elcock, F.. Park, T. W. Duff, G. Heinz, and E. Teicholmann. MOTION OF SYMPATHY The Mayor referred to the tragic accident in which Mr Wm. Jeffries a former Councillor had lost his life. The Mayor moved that the Council place on record its deep sense of loss sustained by the death of Mr Jeffries, and that their deep sympathy be conveyed to his widow. The motion was carried in silence, members standing. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE From Mrs Jeffries and relatives of the late Wm. Jeffries thanking Council for expression of sympathy in their recent bereavement. —Received. From the Town Clerk, Tinnu'u, re accommodation for Municipal Conference, 1937.—Received. From the Superintendent, State Advances, forwarding debenture No. 3 (duly cancelled).—Received. From the N.Z. 'Refrigerating Co., advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika :—- December, 1936, 56 sheep, *27 lambs. January, 1937, 44 sheep, 9 lambs.—Received.

From Picnic Committees asking for the use of Cass Square as follows Blackball Picnic Committee, Saturday, February 27. Grey Watersiders Picnic Committee, Saturday, March 6. Brunner Miners and Combined Schools Committee, Saturday, March 13.—Received and approved. From F. W. From Ivanieri Electric Ltd., advising charge to be made for electrical energy for pump until it is definitely decided to retain continuous or intermittent pumping for a large proportion of each month until such time as the Council’s permanent pumps are installed.—Received and approved. From the N.Z. Steel Pipe and Tank Co. Ltd., asking in regard to Contract “B” for 8 inch pipes whether Council is satisfied that the N.Z. Manufacturers received due consideration." —Re ceived.

From Employment Division. Depart merit of Labour, advising that the 12% subsidy offered was on the understanding that pipes would be of N.Z. manufacture and asking why N.Z. pipes could not have been used for the job. —Received.

Christchurch, forwarding copy of tlm camping ground regulations, 1936, and asking whether the Council desires this regulation to be gazetted as applicable to the Borough of Hokitika. —Received ; consideration deferred. From the District Engineer, N.Z. Railways, intimating that in regard to the temporary water supply at the Kanieri dredge that his Department is prepared to supply and install a halfinch meter and pay at the rate of l/3d. per 1.000 gallons of water consumed. —Received and approved.

From Ted Williams, application for metalling at bis frontage in Park Street.—Received and approved. From Stewarts and Lloyds, Ltd., advising that whereas in their quotation for the Sin. pipes they asked for sixteen weeks for completion, they now «nd that they will he unable to complete the contract until approximately twenty weeks from the date of acceptance, and asking that the Council agree to the extension.—Received and approved. From J. C. Maefarlane, reporting in reference to pipe line from reservoir— Received. It was resolved to apply to the County Council to clean out the Hau Hau road drain on the flat. From Kanieri-Hokitika Sawmills, Ltd., stating there was no objection to the raising of the railway lino on Gibson Quay, subject to no expense being required from them but offering in the event of any river erosion to carry any stone required free of cost from Knnieri ; subject to the Council paying for cost of loading and unloading.—Received.

Foreman's Report

The Foreman (Mr F. Chesterman) re-

ported that the following work s were carried out during the month. The well at Lloyd’s corner caved in, the timber having rotted awayjfand being dangerous to traffic, wc .rqin'ov'ed the, covering and filled ''it up with- stones.

On the sth, Healey Street drain overflowed cutting away some ot the footpath, and the side of the street between Bealey and Fitzherbert Streets taking two days to repair. O’Brien’s lorry was engaged for two days with tlio drag planing the rough bumps off the following streets, f Hampden, Sowell, Sale and Weld Streets and Gibsons Quay. Asphalt was put in pot holes in Revell Street, Weld Street, and Hamilton Street.

The kerbing at the Bank of New Zealand corner in Camp Street was raised, and now requires some asphalt to level the outer edge. One chain as asphalt was laid on the footpath at Miss Archer’s in Bealey Street, and the water service repaired. The growth was cleaned out from the intake of Bealey, Hall, Sale, Rolleston and Livingstone Streets drains. On the 20th the water pipes crossing Stribling Creek on the Lake Road pulled out, on account of timber collecting against one of the supports during a flood, this we repaired next morning before noon. 184 feet of Jin. galvanised piping was laid on the Beach Road leading to Air Atkinson’s for a water service. A new pipe was put in the main at the corner of Rolleston Street and Gibson’s Quay, and the water service was renewed at the Post i Office Hotel, corner of Hamilton and Sewell Streets, new services were put in to Mr H. Preston’s in Brittan Street, Mrs Nutting’s in Fitzherbert Street, and at a new residence in Fitzherbert Street opposite the Westland Brewery. Bands were put on burst pipes in Sewell Street, Stafford Street, Hampden Street, Weld Street, Hau Hau Road in the swamp and on the Lake Road. A roadway was put in off Livingstone Street to Mr Cnlinri’s property to enable him to cart timber for a new building. A large number of leaks were repaired during this month taking up a lot of time. The average depth of water in the reservoir was 2ft 4in.

Reports. From manager abattoirs reporting there were slaughtered during January, 47 cows, 61 bullocks, 16 heifers, 246 sheep, 129 lambs 17 pigs, 2 calves. Condemned, 1 cow, 1 sheep. Fees for month £76/18/-, (same period last year £BO/8/-).—R ecei ved. The Treasurer reported receipts £1035/10/-, payments £951/5/7, debit balance £1353/6/11. —Received. Accounts amounting to £I2OB/0/11 were passed for payment. Crs, Duff and Teiehelmann and Inspector were appointed a sub-commit-tee to deal with the question of footcrossings.
