, The smallness of the subsidy on- its rates which the Southland County. Council receives- from the Government, as compared-with the allocation to smaller counties, caused a long discussion at to-day’s meeting begun after the reading of a letter frdm the Prime Minister on the subject. The discussion: was marked by stronglyworded protests against the Government’s treatment of the council. It >vas suggested 'by members that this county was being penalised because ; '.ot its strong financial position, and that the Southland County farmers’ £1 rates was worth only £l' 1 s /d, P’h jl© the Wallace County farmers’ £l\ was worth £1 ss. The Government’s fiction was declared by. several councillors to be most unfair. . It was suggested that a petition be organise! fis -protest against the smallness' of the subsidy granted on the rates.
