Concern at the Government’s decision not to pay fees for tlx© erection of houses in the Hutt VaHey under the Government’s building scheme, was expressed at a meeting of the Borough Council. A letter from the Hon. W- Nash, Minister of Finance, , stated that although the Crown will comply with all reasonable local by-la Ws, houses to be built by the Crown will be made under the supervision, of competent architects and engineers, and no additional work will* be thrown upon the Council staff. In these .circumstances it will not he reasonable for the borough to expect any payments for permits or building fees.
The Mayor said the council was th e custodian of the people’s money, and the Government should not try to evade just dues.
After discussion it was decided to appoint a committee of four to want on the Prime Minister. ;
