HAAST-MAKARQRA ROAD In reply to an inquiry, the County Clerk has received the following reply from Mr T. M. Ball, District Engineer,. Otago; respecting progress off'tile new road via the Haast Pass from Otago to Westland, and respecting the Hollyford section destined to reach Jackson Ray:

A good fetart has now been made with the Haast Pass road from Makarora. The survey;is completed to the top of Haast Pass, and there are now--140 men on the work. It is expected to have the full complement 160, ~before the end of this month. AH the men are being provided with new accommodation in accordance with the agreement, and two cook houses and, stores .buildings have been erected. The first six miles is easy going, and we should * make rapid progress until we reach the Pass. ” .

“The Hollyford-Lake McKerrow, section'’is not so far advanced owing .to the fact that no survey was done when the work was authorised, but miles have now been surveyed and bushmen are working on the clearing. About 20 men are now employed, and it is expected that the full complement of 100 authorised, will be on the ground before the end of the present month.” It wlil be very satisfactory to learn that the Government', intentions to prosecute the Otago-Westland road connection is organised sq welj already, and -that every effort is being made to push the work on. V The South Westland road works are progressing equally ; satisfactory. Some of the workmen at Fox river' bridge approaches are now being moved further south, and the construction of the bridge will proceed with a fresli party. Through to Mahitahi arid, beyond constructional work has takfen active shape, and as accommodation is available extra men are being put on the road construction. ■ -r--’. if. ■.
