At last evening’s meeting of the Acclimatisation Society it was reported that the largest eel caught during the month, and submitted to the secretiry for. weighing, weighed 221bs. The ; fish was caught by Mr E. J. Little, fishing from the Kanieri bridge, The Society is offering a pwt . of one guinea for the largest eel ing the season. 1

A tentative plan for the extension of the municipal property and buildings at an estimated cost. of £32,350, prepared by Mr R. S. D. Harman, an architect of Christchurch, was considered by the Greymouth Borough Council at a meeting on Thursday night. After discussion, during which Cr C. Neville said that the scheme was far too expensive for Greymouth, it was decided to invite Mr Harman to come, to Greymouth again before the next meeting of the finance committee of the council, so that he could go more fully into the scheme. The proposals include the purchase of the Anglican Church property at the rear' of the Town Hall.

The Westland County Council has been advised by the Highways Board that from November 1 the main high way from Teremakau to Weheka (via Flowery Creek deviation) an« from Kumara to Arthur’s Pass passes to the full charge of the Main Highways Board funds. The Council will be required to continue its contribution towards the Stafford Loop Main Highway. The saving, however, in annual contribution from the County fund will be substantial. The Council will escape also further sealing costs on the highways, and be granted a proportional reduction in its contribution to the new bridge at Kanieri. The letter from the Board’s; Engineer (Mr R. T. Smith, of Greymouth) concluded: “It is appropriate here for me to express to the Council the Board’s appreciation and my own for the excellent co-operation of the Council during the past years.” This important comm imitation will be placed before the Council at Tuesday’s meeting.' ,

The sports gathering postponed from last Saturday, will he held on Cass Square this afternoon, commencing at 2.30 o’clock; with the juvenile races and games. At 3 o’clock the cycling races will- begin ’and at 3.15 the wheelbarrow, derby will take place. The. prizes will be presented on the ground.

The annual hall in the Woodstock Hall last night of the Pirates Football Club attracted a large attendance in spite of the damp conditions prevailing, and those present passed a very pleasant evening. Good, music w.--provided by the Rhythm Dance Band the floor was jn good order, and a very dainty supper was provided.

In connection with a civil court ease in Christchurch, it was reported in this journal on Thursday that judgment had been given for W. E. Sfmes against G. S. Walton, of Hokitika, ror £23, being valuation fees and travelling expenses by air Pram Christchurch to Hokitika. It is now understood that only £7 10s, the amount of the travelling expenses, was in dispute. This sum represented the difference between 'th e train and the aeroplane fares which-defendant claim ed, the plaintiff had agreed to forego.
