ENGINEER’S MONTHLY REPORT i The County Engineer submitted a report on tile works carried out during the .past month, together with • recommendations of work to be put in hand for the niorth of June, as follows: NOTIiERN RIDING Decking repairs have been carried out to the 2oxt bridge on the beach road below iVumara Juuction. Repairs were carried out to the understructure and northern approach of bridge near It. Bradley’s residence on Spencer’s road. , Men working under No. 5 scheme have been employed removing boulders from ; the cut through the shingle bank below Malfroy’s bridge. The cut shows a gradual increase after each Hood. The slip has been removed from the Gorge stock, track. Following a recent Hood, surface repairs were necessary to the road ! .near Dalglish’s at Arahura. 1 The 16 chains of stone wall along the river bank ojiposite this section of road is assisting the, overflow channels to silt up, and in time will permanently confine the river to the main channel. CENTRAL RIDING

County trucks were engaged on metal repairs along Upper Kokatahi Whitcombe, Dorothy Falls and Seddoii Terrace roads. Following a recent gale, local labour ■ was engaged to remove trees debris from Doughboy road and Lake Arthur track. A decayed box cluvert on Seddon Terrace road was replaced with 12 inch concrete pipes. Local relief men were engaged on this road, cleaning watertables and cutting back over hanging scrub. Two men were engaged cleaning drains along Dawson’s road at Lower Kokatahi. On completion of drains, one day’s metal patching will be carried out with a County truck. Satisfactory progress is being made with the - Milltown-Afahura track formation. The clearing has.been completed for 1 mile 30 chains, and followed by "the formation for 1 mile 7 chains. Mananui Road formation . contract ha s been completed for 72 chains, the remaining 12 chains should be completed early next month. The metalling contract is proceeding as the weather permits. The programme of work for the following month includes six days of continuous metalling with two trucks along sections of Whitcombe and McArthur roads, 2 days patch metalling on Municipal and Dorothy Falls .roads. Relief labour will he engaged cleaning 30 chains of Wall road I outlet drain at Koiterangi. SOUTHERN RIDING ' Two County trucks were engaged with local labour for 6 days metalling various roads in the Harihari district. Arrangements have been made to carry out repairs to the track along Totara Lagoon between Ruatapu and Ross. The work will take 2 men two weeks to complete. . The contract for the la Fontaine extension -is • progressing slowly. Trees have been felled, and removed for a distance of 24 chains and followed with the formation. The, metalling of this section will follow as soon as the formation is approved. -v ■ A contract is in progress for clearing, widening and reforming various sections along seven miles of the Wataroa prospector’s track. The northern abutment of the.bridge on Scally’s road at Wataroa was raised and wire crates' put in to prevent further scour. The programme of work for the month of June in this riding, includes 6 days of continuous metalling with two County trucks along "Wataroa Flat road. One twin 2ft 3jn concrete pipe culvert and one 12in culvert are to be put in on Loan Block Road. The large culvert will require 20 yards °* filling and will be carried out when the trucks are in the district.. GENERAL Owing to the steadily increasing, •timber traffic over the various County .roads, I would recommend that the Council consider a charge against the owners of mptor-vehicles engaged in the transport of timber at the fate of 2d per 100 super feet of sawn timber over a\l|County roads under class IV. This charge to be increased by Id per 100 super feet for distances exceeding 5 miles on any County road\or roads within the above classification.
