Ale Arthur stated to-da.y. that Thirkell could . not have borrowed any money from the British ‘National Trust, as he was reported to have done. Ho could not have got money from the Trust, to establish his Alanhattan Cafe, because lie went into that business two months after the British National Trust ceased operations. The business of’ the company was then in the hands of the Public Trustee of New South Wales.

“Also,” added Air AlcAithur, “it is absuid to suppose that the Trust would, havo accepted a mortgage for money over land in which he had no equity.” .

DREDGE STRANDED

DUNEDIN, Alay 8

Nearly 4(1 hours after the launching was commenced ,on Wednesday evening the huge gold dredge at Alexandra was finally moved into the Molyileux River at noon to-day. The work, however, is not yet over, for the machine has grounded on the bottom of the river and efforts are still being made to get hei out into the current. It is hoped that this task will be completed today. Tlieie is no immediate hope of launching the Clyde dredge.

DANG EROUS FLYING

An aeroplane crash at 'Jolinsonville three and a hall years ago was recalled to-day: when L. E. P. Taylor and A. H. de Tourettes were charged before Mr Stilwell, S.M., with dangerous flying. The hearing was adjourned till May 22. , ; Taylor is charged with . flying in such a manner as to cause unnecessary dangef to persons and property on land, and with carrying ouij flying which because of the low altitude and its proximity to persons and dwellings, was dangerous to the public safety. ' .

,De Tourettes. has two similar charges preferred against him. The machine was being flown by de Tourettes, but when the trouble developed Taylor, a more experienced pilot, is understood to have taken over the controls.

The prosecuting inspector said that Keenan made a false declaration by stating his daughter was being maintained .by him, whereas she had died as far hack as 1924, seven years before lie had registered under the Unemployment Act. ‘•This man insisted in his false pretense by maintaining that he had three children whereas liq had only two.,” the inspector said. “We had to make many inquiries and eventually found that he had only two children. He lias defrauded the Department of £39 Bs.” Air Hunt imposed a fine of £2O.
