Mr J. W. ELLISON -

WELLINGTON,"January 17: The death took place yesterday, of, . Mr John Wybrants Ellison, J.P., formerly Superintendnt of Police. '« t he late Mr Ellison who was in his 86th year suffered a long illness. From constable to superintendent, Mr Elli* son had held all ranks in the Police Force of New Zealand. He was a native of Donegal, Ireland, and oame to the Dominion when 18, and after four years’ experience of mining ar,d farming, he joined the Armed Constabulary, and later was transferred to the Civil Police. He served in Wellington ’ from 1887, and was promoted to he sergeant in 1880. He served in that rank at Wellington, Auckland and Wanganui. In 1898 he was made- Inspector. He was the first officer to 1 e appointed, a superintendent when that rank was recreated about 1912. He retired fom the Force in 1915. The late Mr Ellison was a prominent Freemason.

The death occurred of Walter Leiham, aged 50, of Lauriston, a prominent breeder and exhibitor, a judge of clydesdales, English Leicesters and corriedale and an ex-president of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association.
