TO MEET LATE IN FEBRUARY*

MINISTERIAL STATEMENTS.

WELLINGTON, December 12,

In an interview, the Hon. M. J. Savage indicated Parliament would bo called together towards .the end ot February, when some of the majon blanks of the Government’s policy would be put into operation. These inchided amendments to the Arbitration Act. It was also probable authority would be sought for the completion of the Napier-Gisborne railway. He emphasised there would he no delay in presenting legislation. When the house met, it would be ready. Commenting on Parliamentary procedure in general, he said he saw no reason why it should not work the greater part of the year. By this he did not mean Parliament should actually be in session, but if Parliament met just prior to the public accounts being completed, ; essential business could be done, and then if necessary, Parliament, could adjourn for a month or longer as the situation

required. Mr Savage leaves for Auckland early next week, and upon his return early in the New Year, he will get down to the serious business of drafting legislation in readiness for the session.

The Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, said to-day he intends to visit all jobs and prospective jobs. After visiting the East Coast railway, he intends to visit the West Coast of the South Island, and the South Island main trunk line. He said he intended to abolish relief works on lie works as soon as possible, selecting those jobs that were essential in the interests of the nation, putting on capable men at a reasonable wage, giving them decent conditions with a view to creating new assets and new services to the nation. When that was done he expected from the men a reasonable return. He said lie would not be stampeded into any undertaking. but would, give undertakings 1 mature consideration and secure the approval of his colleagues.
