To-day is the centenary of the birth of Andrew Carnegie, who used so much of his wealth to aid learning and instruction throughout the world by the libraries. Following his lamented death the Carnegie Corporation came into being, and being well equipped with funds and future income, has been able to continue the good worK established so thoroughly by the generous donor. Hokitika has participated in the gift granted for the local library, and a handsome building was erected, and a working scheme devised which enables the library to be carried on as an active unit of the town, giving useful public service indefinitely. There are facilities for the free use of the books, papers and magazines, and daily the institution is functioning as the donor wished.
