WATER SUPPLY

* FOR HOKITIKA COUNCIL CONSIDERS PROPOSALS, An important step' in connection with the proposed new water supply for the Hokitika Borough was the decision by the Council fast .evening to make application to the Loans Board for permission to raise.-a loan of say £12,000 lor the reticulation of the town and the necessary pumping plant. This decision was reached on the motion of the Mayor (Mr.G. A. Perry), and Cr E. Teichelmann.

Consequent upon Professor C-amp-I bell’s visit early this year, two alternaI tives are before the Council to provide necessary improvements to the supply. One is the renewal of the line from Lake Kanieri to the reservoir, a scheme costing between £20,000 and £22,000 together with the retciulation of the town, costing an additional £IO,OOO, a total of over £30,000, which would cost the Council-.£lßoo per-an-num in interest and sinking fund over a term, of 40 years. The other scheme is that of' pumping the supply within the /Borough, costing £SOO per annum for power, and £6OO per annum in interest and sinking fund, on a £IO,OOO , loan for: reticulation of the borough, an anual cost of £llOO, over the same period,- compared with £IBOO on the first- proposal. •, • | ■■ l A letter Was deceived" from the Medical 'Office#' of Health (Th* T. Fletcher ; Telford), who reported on his inspection of the bores, and reservoir in company with the Mayor.; and Messrs W. J. Radford and J: N. Robinson. He was satisfied the water > in the bores was derived from the river shingle, and that the .yield was regular and ample. He was surprised to find the flow into the reservoir from the Lake was only*' 15Q gallons per minute. The fact that there was only 4ft in the reservoir at 9.40 a m. showed there must he a serious leakage or partial blockage in the pipeline. Ho approved of the use of bores 1 and 3. for-the-town supply. Ho recommended the consideration of installing 'a ’diesel engine «as a stand-by rpanip. - He also’recomrrierided the eatly -li ! connecting up of these wells’to the reservoir ensuring irn adequate supply for - fife-fightitig/ dontestic. arid' health purposes. He would riot suggest the Council should abandon the lake supply until it was assured the water from the hor.es. was ■* ample .under tidns.;'. j c; j"'The Major said Hie recommendations ! were what the Council proposed doing. A letter-was received/from Kanieri j Electric, Ltd., giving details of; running costs of power for the proposed I puriiping scheme. I Cr H. T. The, y Council might'abandon the line from, 'say, : the penstock to .the lake, hut herecorimiended niaintainiug the penstock supply in the” meantime. / There was a general , discussion in committed-. regarding 1 question of power to drive 'the pumps, together with costs, the Mayor saying he did not think it necessary for Kanieri Ejectrlc to instai any extra plant

C r Parry suggested the water works committee should .- go ahead with estimates of plant and building. Tbs Mayor . considered they should first prove the supply adequate, and then' go freely into the matter with Professor Campbell when they would have all the necessary data. They would then carry out Ct Parry s pro-

posal. It was decided that permission be first obtained from’ the Loans Board to- raise the necessary loan, and that they ascertain the adequacy of the supply from she bores. ...A -
