NO SALVAGE
MAHENO’S BACK BROKEN (Australian Press Association.) BRISBANE, July 12. There was no attempt to-day to salvage the Mahenu. The tug Oarlock reached the scene this morning, but she was later discharged by the Japanese master of the Oonah, who has charge of both vessels. A later message states that Captain Tanaka, master of the Mahenu, had reported that the Maheno’s hack was broken and that there was no hope of saving her. The seas are again rough, ft is impossible to estimate ihe full extent of the damage to the Maheno.
A LATER REPORT
(Received this day at 10.35 a.m.) ' BRISBANE, July 13.
It is now reported the Malieno has not broken her hack, but is believed to be seriously damaged. It; will not lie long, however, before her back will lie broken as the result of the heavy pounding sens. The Japanese paid £6OOO for her.
