The Guardian And Evening Star, with which is incorporated the West Coast Times. SATURDAY, JULY 13, 1935. THE LIKENESS.

Nrw Zealand ‘‘is often called the Britain of the South. The likeness hasbeen referred to at different times, and seems to have been emphasised specially when political conditions here are compared with those at Home. Mr Stanley Baldwin, the leader of the British National Government, had occasion recently to write a candidate contesting a Home scat, and in doing so lie referred to conditions controlled by the political situation, which marked a. similaiity between Britain and New Zealand. Mr Baldwin spoke of reasons why the people should give continued support to the National Government. He mentioned the improvement in finance and industry, the buoyancy of budget returns, and the improvement in trade etc. He went on to remark if | fiat, improvement was to Be maintained. it- was imperative that there

should be a continuity of policy, and in particular industrial •confidence should be retained, while the need for financial- confidence in the Government administration must remain a prominent feature, lie emphasised that the people should not allow their confidence to he shattered by any irresponsible programme to which the Socialist Opposition is committed. Also lie referred to the foreign situation, which a fleets the Motherland vitally. But in regard to the first matters mentioned, his remarks apply vitally to New Zealand. Across the ranges at present representatives of the Labour Opposition are expounding their theories to I provide largess for all without conI viucing anyone about the ability to 1 provide the wherewithal -excepting the : short out admission that the - money 1 will he taken from those who have it! This attempt to build the future of the country' on theoretical plans, which ure often very little better than pious platitudes as to what might he, is in sharp contrast- with what lias been achieved by steady application to meet each issue as the difficulty arose. And though the difficulties were tremendous, and the escape seemed impossible irom a financial crash. New Zeala.nd has been pulled through as ’Britain was milled through, and both enjoy a stability and an outlook which few countries are privileged to do at present. Again, Mr Baldwin spoke of the effort to help all classes for live common good. Party bickerings wore dropped and a wider partnership created politically to .ensure the maintenance of the national position. In both countries there was the like definite resolve to work along broad lines for the common good, and the results achieved justify the policy. Among the Opposition how often is heard the attempt to create class hatred, or to induce seetinmil trouble, merely to aggravate the local situation for the administration. At present the unemployed issue is being used as a stacking house to stir up political trouble. Yet nothing could he fairer than the great efforts of the Government to meet the situation. Every advance, nevertheless is criticised by the political opponents, who decline to see any good in the genuine attempt to remedy the lot of the unemployed. It is part of the political game apparently to make capital out of the situation, But the country has had the opportunity of .incising the situation over the years, and with the security maintained in the face of stunendous difficulties there is surely much to give whole-hearted credit for.
