GAMING BILL
AMENDMENTS EXPECTED WELLINGTON, July 10. “When Parliament adjourned for the Christmas vacation the Prime Minister announced that a further opportunity would lie given the House of discussing the Gaming Bill, which had already passed the Legislative Council, having been introduced there hv the Hon. Eliot R. Davis,” said Mr H. E. Nicoll in his address to delegates at the New Zealand Trotting Conference. “The bill seeks to remove the prohibition of the use of the double totalisator and the restriction on the publication of dividends. It is contended that if these became law the Government would receive substantial additional revenue, the club’s financial position would ho considerably relieved and some clubs saved from extinction; moreover a large volume of illegal betting would lie diminished. The restrictions placed upon the sport in New Zealand are not obtainable in any other British country and those opposing the facilities we ask for are unable to sustain any sound argument as to why they should not be allowed. We. hope to see the bill become law this year.”
