RUGBY FOOTBALL

ALL BLACKS CHANCES OPTIMISTIC PREDICTION WELLINGTON, July 9. The All‘Blacks’ chances of success in Britain on' the s forthcoming tour were commented on optimistically by Mr J. Marsden Caughey, of Auckland, when he arrived by the Rangitiki after a visit to England. At Twickenham, he said, he saw many of Britain’s best Rugby players in action, and although he qualified his comments by a note of cautious reserve, he allowed himself to remark that he would not be surpiised if the All Blacks were more than a match for them.

Mr Caughey is the father of T. H. 0. Caughey, an All Black, who met him on his arrival. He did not require to be told very mych about the New Zealand team. “1 was told a great deal by wireless about the.selec-. t,ion on -my way out,V’ he said. The; names. I received were enough to give ; mn the impression that that type of! player will create an excellent imPres-. sion on the tour, not only on the field, but also in other /■ spect;; ns ambassadors of New Zealand.”

Mr Caughey met in England several men who will be in close contact with the All Blacks. One of those is Admiral Percy Boyds, who will be associated with Mr V. R. Meredith on the tour. “He is an exceptionally fine gentleman,” Mr Caughey said. “Another I met was Mr ,T. Ci-easey, a member of the committee formed for the entertainment of the Al] Blacks. The indications are that the boys are going to have a very good time. Mr Caughey remarked that Rugby in England is increasing in popularity, as is shown by the number of clubs and the general attention paid to the game.
