NASTY WOUND

MAN CLAWED BY ZOO TIGER, LONDON, July 6. While carrying out arrangements for a “Children’s Hour” animal broadcast from Belfast Zoo an engineer, Thomas 1 Holmes, was mauled by a tiger* He was at work on the top of the cage fixing a microphone, and let his foot dangle over the side. Without warning the tiger sprang, clawed at the leg, and inflicted a severe gash. The animal then attempted to pull Holmes into the cage. Although in agony, Holmes did not lose consciousness. His shouts for help brought keepers to his assistance. He managed to pull his leg clear, and the animal was driven into its sleeping quarters. Holmes was taken to hospital.

A keeper afterwards stated: “The tiger is one of the nastiest-tempered animals in the whole collection. We have always to keep a watchful eye on it.”
