WAR VETERANS

CASH BONUSES DEMANDED. NEW YORK, July 8. : American ex-servicemen assert that-, it is -unfair to condemn their demand for £400,000,000 cash bonus for their, war service. They say.' they are convinced that the war veterans of Canada, Australia and New Zealand rereiv-. ?d far more generous recognition from, their Governments. They point with envy to assistance in becoming farmers or business men given returned soldiers in the British Dominions.

Their bonus amounts, the recipients my, only to £2OO when, it matures in 194v>—27 years after .the end of the war. Had they been paid cash at the end of the war the amount would not have been more than half that sum. The rate per day—7s fid for men who went overseas—for a period of six months, was computed after consideration of the high salaries and wages in vogue in the United States during the war years. Nevertheless, the bonus was vetoed by ex-Presidents Harding, Conlidge and Hoover, and President Roosevelt. The vetoes of Messrs Coolidge and Hoover were over-ridden.
