TOWLINE BREAKS
MAHENO ADKIFT HELPLESS IN HEAVY CYCLONE. (Australian Press Association.) (Received this day at 10.25 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 9. The steamer Maheno, recently purchased by Japan, and being towed there by the Oonah/is drifting helplessly off the Queensland coast. As her propellors have been removed the vessel is little better than a derelict.. She was last reported sixty miles southeast of Sandy Cape, and is being driven towards lands by terific seas. She carries a crew of eight. The steamer Oonali stood by all yesterday afternoon, but late last night sent a wireless message that something had gone wrong with her steering gear. The Oonali has a complement of 31. She is heavily laden, and is difficult to manoeuvre.
It seems the towline broke early yesterday afternoon, and all attempts to pick it up failed. Shore stations and other ships are having difficulty in keeping in touch with the Oonah.
Her wireless operator is a Japanese, and atmospherics are very bad. An intensification of the cyclone is forecast by the weather bureau. In response to urgent messages from the master of the Oonali late last night, a powerful tug was to leave Brisbane early this morning, and will attempt to take the Maheno in tow.
