HARD LABOUR

TREASURER’S THEFT OF £343 “NOT A CASE FOR PROBATION” (Per Press Association, Copyright). AUCKLAND, July 8. “Young men must understand they must accept responsibility for theii conduct when they do not respect the law. If they choose to steal, they "lUst pay the penalty,” said Mr Justice Failwhen sentencing Colin Moore Alitchenxon, aged 23. former treasurer of the Clem Da we Revue Coy., for the theft of £343.

The Judge said prisoner, last Octohei. when a shortage of £BO had been discovered, had been given a warning and advised of the system he was to follow. He was old enough to have sense if his responsibility. It was a painful case, for prisoner had a good record, but his was not the type of case for which .probation could be granted.

Although there was no doubt prisoner had used some of the money in the interests of the company, tile greater part of it must have been snent in the knowlelge that he was stealing. He was sentenced to twelve months hard labour, to be followed by 12 months’ reformative detention.
